Built in 1395, this was the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty and is the largest of Seoul's five grand palaces. The Royal Guard Changing Ceremony, strolling in rented hanbok, and views like Geunjeongjeon Hall make it hugely popular with international visitors.

Royal Guard Changing Ceremony
수문장 교대식
A ceremony that recreates the changing of the palace guard from the Joseon Dynasty. The vivid traditional costumes and Joseon-era court music are a must-see. Twice daily (10:00 / 14:00), about 20 minutes each. Closed Tuesdays.

Geunjeongjeon Hall
근정전 / Geunjeongjeon
The main throne hall of the Joseon Dynasty, where royal coronations and important state ceremonies took place. A National Treasure of Korea, its sweeping rooflines and stone courtyard are breathtaking.

Hyangwonjeong Pavilion
향원정
A hexagonal pavilion floating on a lotus pond. Cherry blossoms in spring, autumn foliage, and snowy scenes in winter make it endlessly photogenic. A guaranteed standout shot in hanbok.

National Folk Museum of Korea
국립민속박물관
A free folk museum located on the Gyeongbokgung grounds. Learn about Korea's traditional culture and daily life. Also a great place to escape the rain or the heat.

A rare neighborhood where traditional Joseon-era houses (hanok) still stand. The "Eight Views of Bukchon," lined with around 900 hanok, are a treasure trove of photo spots. Since residents actually live here, quiet, respectful strolling is a must.

A small museum dedicated to folk painting (minhwa), set in a renovated hanok. See traditional Korean folk art and even try a painting workshop. Great for a rainy day too.
